How to Choose the Right Backpack for Your Next Adventure

Choosing the right backpack for your next adventure can be a daunting task, especially if you're new to backpacking. Your backpack will be your home away from home, carrying everything you need for your trip, so it's important to choose one that fits your body, your gear, and your needs. There are so many places you can get a backpack, whether that is going to some of the pro stores or checking out Facebook marketplace or a good thrift store. Here we'll cover the key factors to consider when choosing the right backpack for your next adventure.

  1. Capacity: The first thing to consider is how much gear you need to carry. Backpacks are measured in liters, and the capacity you need will depend on the length of your trip, the season, and the gear you're bringing. For a weekend trip, a 40-50 liter backpack should suffice, while a longer trip or a winter trip might require a 60-80 liter pack.

  2. Fit: A properly fitting backpack is crucial for comfort and safety on the trail. Look for a backpack that fits your torso length, shoulder width, and hip size. No matter where you get your pack, I would definitely recommend going to one of the pro stores and getting fitted so you know what your proper size is. Many backpacks come in different sizes, so be sure to try on several to find the right fit. You may even find, like me, that you need one size for the waist and a different size for the shoulder straps.

  3. Suspension system: The suspension system is what keeps the weight of the pack off your shoulders and distributes it to your hips. Look for a backpack with a sturdy frame, comfortable shoulder straps, and a padded hip belt. I grew up with external frames, and now day they even have lots of ultra-lite no frames, but I myself prefer my internal frame.

  4. Access: Backpacks come in several different styles of access, including top-loading, panel-loading, and hybrid. Top-loading packs are the most common, but panel-loading packs offer easier access to your gear. Hybrid packs combine the two, offering the best of both worlds.

  5. Features: Look for a backpack with features that suit your needs. Some features to consider include external pockets for water bottles or snacks, a rain cover, a hydration system, and a sleeping bag compartment. I would recommend staying basic till you have some experience under you, as you’ll get a better idea on what you like on the trail.

  6. Weight: The weight of your backpack can make a big difference in how comfortable and enjoyable your trip is. Look for a backpack that is lightweight but still sturdy enough to carry your gear comfortably.

  7. Brand and quality: Investing in a high-quality backpack from a reputable brand is worth the investment once you know what you like. In Colorado, so many of us backpack that you can find used quality brands all over to try out. A good backpack will last for years and be comfortable on multiple trips. I still have about 7 backpacks from over the many years and even the oldest of packs will still function on the trail if I needed to outfit some friends.

By considering these key factors, you'll be well on your way to choosing the right backpack for your next adventure. Remember, a good backpack is an investment in your comfort and safety on the trail, so take the time to find the one that's right for you. Happy trails!
