Gear Up for Adventure: Equipping a New Boy Scout with Camping Gear

Are you a proud parent of a new Scout who is eager to embark on exciting camping adventures? Equipping your young Scout with the right camping gear is essential for their safety, comfort, and enjoyment in the great outdoors. But with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start or how much to spend money on. Don't worry, I've got you covered! Here I'll walk you through the essentials for equipping a new Scout with camping gear for their first year.

  1. Sleeping Bag: A warm and comfortable sleeping bag is essential for a good night's sleep in the wilderness. Look for a sleeping bag that is suitable for the expected temperature range of the camping destination and is the right size for your Scout's height. A scout who gets cold on their first couple camping trips could may not want to keep going.

  2. Sleeping Pad: A sleeping pad provides insulation and cushioning for a comfortable night's sleep. You can easily start with a foam roll pad, but I would recommend eventually getting a lightweight and compact air pad that can be easily carried in a backpack.

  3. 10 essentials: The 10 essentials is a list of basic items that every Scout will carry during outdoor adventures for safety and preparedness. These essentials include navigation tools like a map and compass, a headlamp or flashlight for visibility, sun protection items like sunscreen and sunglasses, a first aid kit, a knife or multi-purpose tool, fire starter devices, extra clothing appropriate for the weather, extra food, and a way to carry or purify water.

  4. Cooking Gear: Basic cooking gear such as cookware, and utensils are essential for meal preparation at the campsite. Look for lightweight and durable options that are easy to use and clean.

  5. Clothing: Proper clothing is crucial for comfort and protection in the outdoors. Pack appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, including waterproof rain gear, warm layers, and sturdy hiking boots.

  6. Duffle Bag: A good sized duffle bag that can carry all of the gear will help them get their gear from camping trip and back.

  7. Personal Items: Don't forget to pack personal items such as insect repellent, sunscreen, and toiletries.

Here is a list of gear you should slowly start getting during the first years as they’ll start getting into more advanced events like backpacking as they get older:

  1. Backpack: A good-quality backpack that fits well and is properly adjusted to your Scout's body is crucial for carrying all their gear during camping trips. Look for a backpack with multiple compartments, padded shoulder straps, and a waist belt for added comfort and support.

  2. Tent: Most troops will provide tents, but as they start getting into backpacking they may want to eventually get their own backpacking tent. Look for a lightweight and easy-to-set-up tent. Make sure it has proper ventilation and a rainfly to keep them dry in wet conditions.

Remember to involve your Scout in the process of selecting and packing their camping gear. Teach them how to use and care for their gear, and encourage them to take responsibility for their belongings during camping trips. You can buy the gear new or if you spend a little time you can get quality used gear on marketplace or at used gear stores. No matter how you get it, properly equipping your new Scout with camping gear will not only ensure their comfort and safety but also empower them to be self-reliant and prepared for the adventures that await them in the outdoors.

Happy camping and enjoy the great outdoors with your new Scout!
